5 Best Video Game Movie Adaptations

Ah, the video game movie adaptations. Often a doomed venture from its conception and the source of endless rants of hardened fans. I’m here to argue that not all movies based on video games are complete crap. Here I’ve listed the following in my opinion the best video game to movie adaptations.

1. Pokémon: The First Movie (1998)

The Pokémon universe was created in 1990 by the Game Freak company under the name “Capsule Monster.” Nintendo signed on to market and published the game which came out in 1996. The animated film Pokémon The First Movie tells the story when the debut of Mewtwo, a bio-engineered Pokémon created from DNA of Mew, one of the rarest Pokémon of all. After escaping from the lab where it was created, Mewtwo is determined to prove its own superiority. It lures a number of talented trainers into a Pokémon battle like never before – and of course Ash and his friends are happy to accept the challenge!

2. Mortal Kombat (1995)

There were a few video game movies before the Mortal Kombat came out in 1995, but it’s one of the first to actually do well in the box office. The CGI was impressive for its time and the fight scenes are done well. The movie stayed faithful to the franchise and captured the essence of characters.

For nine generations an evil sorcerer has been victorious in hand-to-hand battle against his mortal enemies. If he wins a tenth Mortal Kombat tournament, desolation and evil will reign over the multi universe forever. To save earth, three worriers must overcome seemingly insurmountable odds, their own inner demons, and superhuman foes in this action/adventure movies based on one of the most popular video games of all time.

3. Tomb Raider (2001)

Even with the video game movies of the 90s, Lara Croft: Tom Raider really brought the video game into public eyes in the 2000s. Lara Croft, making her perfect cast, and her appeal resonated across Tom Raider fans and new viewers alike.

Exploring lost empires, finding priceless treasures, punishing villains in mortal combat – it’s all in a days work for Lora Croft.

4. The Angry Birds Movie (2016)

Flightless birds lead a mostly happy existence, except for Red who just can’t get past the daily annoyances of life. His temperament leads him to anger management class, where he meets fellow misfits Chuck and Bomb. Red becomes even more agitated when his feathered brethren welcome green pigs to their island paradise. As the swine begin to get under his skin, Red joins forces with Chuck and Bomb to investigate the real reason behind their mysterious arrival.

5. Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010)

Alice is back and trying her best to destroy the Umbrella Corporation, in Resident Evil: Afterlife. She teams up with a group of survivors and searches for Arcadia, a safe haven. This was the top-grossing film in the franchise’s series, to date. It was marketed heavily as a 3D film, which was the driving force for a few films in 2010.
